About this collection

Watson Library’s developing collection of American artist-designed trade bindings, published from 1830 to 1930. This is a representative collection of decorated bindings, by a wide variety of artists and designers, from the major art movements of the period, including Aesthetic, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Major and lesser-known artists, technical approaches, and binding variants are featured. The works of prominent artist/designers, such as Edwin Austin Abbey, Margaret Armstrong, Thomas Watson Ball, Decorative Designers, Frank Hazenplug, Rockwell Kent, Alice C. Morse, Bertha Stuart, Elihu Vedder, and Sarah Wyman Whitman are well represented.
