ROBERT LEHMAN COLLECTION GIVEN TO THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM
Mr. Edwin L. Weisl, the President of the Robert Lehman Foundation, on behalf of
the Board of Directors of the Foundation, announced Thursday, September 25, 1969,
the Gift of the Robert Lehman Collection to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The
Collection described by experts as one of the most important ever gathered together
privately, will be maintained together as an entity within the Museum forever. This
Gift, made in accordance with the wishes of Mr. Lehman, the first Chairman of the
Metropolitan, will be on terms and conditions of an agreement still to be worked
out between the Foundation and the Museum.
In accepting the gift, Arthur A. Houghton, Jr., President of the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, said, "On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I accept with profound
gratitude this magnificent Collection. It will enormously enrich the institution

Lehman Foundation and to Mr. Robert Owen Lehman for making possible this gift
which will give so much pleasure to the citizens of New York and indeed to the
nation and the world."
Thomas P. F. Hoving, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, termed
the announcement "one of the most thrilling in the history of the Museum, which for
one hundred years has dedicated itself to the collecting of works of art of the
