N4629 : 16th C. folding iron lectern from the Escorial, graceful form opening on the scissors system to an inclined plane to receive the book. Book rest is covered with leather stitched with heavy linen thread, inlaid with a pad of red cut velvet lined with damask and finished with gold cords and tassels. Both front and back of the lectern bear an inscription in large raised letters, once gilded, against red ground.
